Hov Pod Development

Hov Pod Hovercraft were first shown at the Southampton International Boat Show in the UK in 2002 - I happened to be a visitor to the show and begged the company founder, Peter Ward, for a job. There was a lot of TV coverage of the Hov Pod at the boat show, people are generally fascinated with how hovercraft work and by the fact that you can flit from one surface to another without stopping. Here are a couple of videos showing the first Hov Pod interviews - and -

Company founder Peter Ward was a marine engineer and product designer who wanted a buy a hovercraft following a paraglide accident - he like flying, but liked to be closer to the ground after breaking his leg in a paraglide landing. (The Hov Pod cruises at a height of around 8 inches).

As a ships engineer, he traveled the world, and had the opportunity to visit a number of hovercraft suppliers in the late 1990’s, but no hovercraft matched his expectations for safety and ease of use. He pondered why hovercraft were not as popular as personal watercraft, since they appear safer, can be used at low tide, or over land. He predicted that if someone were to create a personal leisure hovercraft that was easy to use and maintain, safe, and fun, more people would buy them, and that prediction became reality.

His design approach was different - not to start with a race hovercraft and try to make that suitable for leisure commercial use, his design approach can be described as a blank sheet approach, where the designer prioritizes what features are commonly expected for marine leisure products - e.g., ease of use, ease of maintenance, engines supplied by companies who offer international support (we have rejected some engines used by other suppliers for this reason), engines with full manufacturer’s warranty, hence why we don’t up-rate or modify engines to invalidate warranties. Peter particularly focused on durability and safety, and these are two areas where the Hov Pod fundamentally differs from all other hovercraft. The Hov Pod is unique, manufactured from HDPE, and fitted with polyurethane / nylon weave skirts.
